WHAT IS THE CURRICULUM?
The Dental Assisting Curriculum is an instructional program providing a 13-week Dental Assisting Course consisting of 78 hours of lecture/lab and a 50-hour externship with a practicing dentist. The program utilizes a hands-on educational approach. The course includes lectures on fundamentals of general dentistry and the basic skills, knowledge and technical proficiency necessary to assist the dentist in the various operative procedures performed in a dental clinic. Completion of the program will allow the student to have enough training to qualify for an entry level position in a dental office.
WHERE CAN I WORK?
In addition to traditional dental practices, dental assistants have the opportunity to work in specialty areas, such as:
Oral and maxillofacial surgery: Removal of teeth and correction of facial deformities
Orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics: Straightening teeth with braces or other appliances
Endodontics: Root canal treatment
Periodontics: Treatment of gum problems
Prosthodontics: Replacement of lost teeth
Pediatric dentistry: Treatment of children
JOB OUTLOOK
Employment of dental assistants is projected to grow 11 percent from 2020 to 2028, much faster than the average for all occupations. The aging population and ongoing research linking oral health and general health will lead to continued increases in the demand for preventive dental services.
